Emerging from the fictional streets of Heathen Harbour, The Anomalous Richard Anonymous embarks upon a gripping series of lyrical adventures and melodic capers. Boasting a range of intricate rhythms, with a detailed and visual wordplay, the Boom bap centric Hip Hop of Richard Anonymous draws inspiration from the mundane drudgery of the commonplace and redescribes the world through stark and vivid imagery. This is conscientious rap coupled with dry cynical humour.
Richard Anonymous is a virtual Hip Hop act and is the brainchild of an unnamed Cape Town based musician and writer. However, the project has ultimately been brought to life through the input of a dedicated team of talented artists, producers and musicians. With a background in music production and a long standing affair with the musical arts, the author has created the fictional character of Richard Anonymous as a vehicle for untethered creativity and artistic expression. Embracing the obscurity and anonymity that comes with being an unknown artist, the character, and encompassing fictionalised world of “Heathen Harbour” serve as a template, and wilful instrument, in the creation of a substantial and very real distance between the art and the artist himself. This will to anonymity stems from the artist's firmly held belief that it is the art, and not the artist, that should be the audience’s primary object of focus.
As is the hallmark of so much in Hip Hop culture, the author draws from a diverse range of personal influences and cultural tropes in order to define the character and music of Richard Anonymous. As such, the character is a pastiche of classic comic book clichés; golden age detective/sci-fi fiction; and broader Hip Hop culture in general. The music is lyric heavy Boom bap delivered with an even-keeled slow flow and a liberal layering of soundbites in simulation of old-time radio era programming. The overall result is a timbre that is rueful and well-weathered.
With a passion for the arts from an early age, Anonymous began writing and reciting poetry at the age of ten. By twelve he had progressed to music, studying classical guitar in his sparetime. Eventually, these two seemingly unrelated artforms would come to merge for the young artist as he discovered Hip-Hop for the first time as a young teenager.
In 2002, he was a co-founder and associate director of the independent record label Fro-Pick Records which went on to release a number of independent mixtapes. Then, in 2003 Richard was a one fifth founding member of the underground rap group I-People-Out which released the indie mixtape “The Harmonic Minor” later that same year. After completing a degree in sound engineering in 2012, he decided to take a break from music for a time to focus on other concerns. Richard returned to the scene with his debut independent full-length rap album “The Volume of Yesterday” in 2019 which was produced in collaboration with the talented Don-Keys and released through the independent label Naughty Bird and in association with Next Music. Richard is currently busy with his follow-up independent album -Heathen Harbour with production by The Studio Next Door due to be released late 2020.
